We’ve already explained what Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist (UM) Coverage is (protection for you when you get involved in an accident that is not your fault), but we didn’t talk about how much of this coverage you should get.
UM coverage is much more expensive for motorcyclists than it is for car drivers. The reason for this is pretty simple – car drivers are much better protected in an accident than motorcyclists. Because of this, UM coverage is one of the more costly parts of a motorcycle insurance policy.
That cost may deter you from getting UM coverage, but we’d suggest getting the highest UM coverage possible. Why? It can cost an awful lot to get healthy again after a motorcycle accident. If you happen to need surgery and physical therapy, it can get very expensive very fast.
If a driver hits you and has the highest levels of liability coverage than you have nothing to worry about as far as hospital bills are concerned. However, if the driver has no insurance or minimum liability coverage you can be left footing the bill. That’s the last thing you want on your mind when you’re trying to get better.
